The days seem to be quickly ticking past, leading up to the first few races of the NCNCA Cyclocross season for 2010. Looking at the NCNCA calendar, it shows a full five months of Cyclocross racing which will fire up in early September and run non stop into January. This full schedule of races allows Nor-Cal riders ample opportunity to find their best form leading up to the 2010 USA National Championships, where our most talented local racers have shined so brightly year after year. The full schedule of events also allows for Cyclocross racing on a local level to be run during the peak season of Cross, the true Winter months, where conditions can become epic during December and January in Northern California. The early season races are usually contested on fast & dry courses where speed is plenty, and dust is prevalent. While the late season competitions favor the true "mudders' and hardened riders who can handle the most brutal conditions Winter racing can bring to the table. The two most dominate Cyclocross teams in Northern California, California Giant Inc./Specialiazed and Bay 101/HRS/Rock Lobster, have their lineups set for 2010. The on course battles between these two top tier Cross teams have been outstanding the past few years, and this season should be more of the same. Anthony Gallino's Cal Giant Inc. team features three of the top male Elite riders in Nor-Cal, Justin Robinson, Cody Kaiser, and Jeremy Ferguson. These three riders are serious studs and can contend for the win in any race they enter. They are backed by the very best Masters team in America. The Cal Giant Inc. Masters team is stacked and raises the bar extremely high for anyone trying to race for victory in events like the BASP Series, the CCCX Series, & the Surf City Series. The Cal Giant Masters team consists of Gina Hall, Carmen D’Aluisio, Josie Jacques-Maynes, Alan Coats, Todd Hoefer, Gannon Myall, Steve Reaney, Ana Flores, Rob Meighan, Norm Kreiss, Dave Anderson, Don Langley, Eric Bustos, Jessie Moore, Jordi Cortes, Frank Curesma, and Tom Ryan. Cal Giant Inc. Masters have brought home 6 National Championship Medals along with 11 top five National Podium finishers over the past 5 years. Nor-Cal's other top Cross squad is Bay 101/HRS/Rock Lobster. Bay 101 will now be co sponsoring the HRS/Rock Lobster team, which is sure to boost this high flying unit which competes on the beautifully crafted Rock Lobster Cross bikes. Leading the charge of this team are three of Nor-Cal's most consistent high finishers over the past few seasons, Sarah Kerlin, Stella Carey, and Josh Snead. Kerlin and Carey are guaranteed to throw down at the front of affairs in the Women's racing. While Snead has been the regions top male Elite performer in local racing the past two seasons. The other extremely high caliber Lobster racers are Dave Wyandt, Scott Chapin, Aaron Odell, Alex Work, Brett Lambert, Aaron Kereluk, Brian Staby, and Jon Mason. CYCLOCROSS SEASON RAMPS INTO ACTION IN ONE MONTH

The Cyclocross season is just around the corner and racing begins in only a few weeks time. Nor-Cal's Cross teams are starting to come together, with rosters filling out, solo and group Cross workouts firing up, and the NCNCA Calender of races becoming just about totally complete. The Scaramento Cyclocross Series dates have been added to the calendar, as has the Bike Monkey Santa Rosa Series event dates. The CCCX Series, the Surf City Series, and the BASP Series, all have dates claimed in what looks to be a awesome season of Cross racing ahead. Classic events like the Folsom Cyclebration Cross, and the Lion of Fairfax Big Swingin' Cycles race only highlight what a great schedule of racing Nor-Cal Cross athletes can pick and choose from. Most of the best riders in Northern California race virtually each weekend to dial in their fitness and practice their chosen craft of cycling's most athletic discipline- Cyclocross. I highly recommend all racers keep a sharp eye on the the NCNCA calendar, as race dates can change and nothing is set in stone with regards to the current calendar listings. Each race season in Northern California brings new surprises. Established teams always seem to add new riders, thus making for fierce competition just in each team, let alone on course racing against other squads. Certain riders step up and deliver great and surprising performances during the year. Ranked riders from other regions relocate to Northern California making the Nor-Cal racing even more competitive. Like Scott/Ritchey rider Kerry Barnholt last season, who dominated Nor-Cal racing in 2009, then went on to win a National Masters Championship in Bend Oregon. New teams form each season, which keeps the Cyclocross energy high and introduces this great sport to new riders of all ages, gender, and cycling ability. One new team which is sure to have a impact on race days is Ciclista Bonita. Women Cross racing overall in Nor-Cal is stellar, the fields in all divisions are large, and the Nor-Cal ladies dominated the USA National Championships in 2009. Ciclista Bonita is a new women's Cross team that is sure to bring more female racers to the table while showing that a healthy lifestyle can be achieved by taking part in the sport of Cyclocross. Bike Station Aptos is backing this group of Women led by Mary Perez. Other riders on this new team are Goldi JM, Winona Hubbard, Rachel Wolff, Livia Peras, and Karen Kefauver, Jenny Meyer Feix, and Dionne Ybarra. I am all for more Women racing Cross and Ciclista Bonita is leading the charge in this realm. Another team note regarding one of Nor-Cal's leading ladies is Karen Brems, who was one of the best Elite Women racers in the NCNCA for 2009 Cross, joining up with Trina Baumsteiger at Team Rambuski Law. These two fine riders are sure to find success in 2010. This race team is also strong on the Masters Men's side with Kevin Merrigan being a new recruit, and set to join Tim Thompson, Jim Gentes, Logan Kelsey, and Edwin Rambuski. I hope to track down more team info to share and continue the build up to the first race of the 2010 Cyclocross season. Cross is King in Nor-Cal, and each and every year I see growth in participation and the level of competition on course. However, please always remember to keep it fun...

CROSS CLINIC ACTION ON THE HORIZON

It is that time of the year for people to start thinking about Cyclocross & preparing themselves for the Cross Season ahead. Velo Girls & Lorri Lee Lown already sent out some great info on their Velo Girls Cross Clinic. Velo Girls always put on outstanding clinics and the group sessions they run are super informative and very fun to participate in. I highly recommend this clinic to all levels of racers. First time Cross riders, as well as Elite level athletes can benefit from these clinics. Matt McNamara & Sterling Sports Group definitely have Cyclocross fever, and they are focused on sharing their joy and passion of the sport with Northern California competitors. 2010/2011 NCNCA CYCLOCROSS CALENDAR COMING TOGETHER

The 2010-2011 NCNCA Cyclocross calendar is slowly but surely coming together. The last few years I have worked hard to get the regions race organizers more active in establishing a calendar of Cross races as early as possible. Each season presents different challenges, however the 2010-2011 Cyclocross season appears to be taking shape right on time. The BASP Series, the Surf City Series, the Central Coast Series, Folsom Cyclebration Cyclocross, and the Lion of Fairfax event have all locked down some dates. Please check the NCNCA Cross calendar for complete details. Most likely there could be a change or two as the racing action fast approaches. I am still waiting to hear back from the Santa Rosa Series & Sacramento Series regarding their selected dates. Plus other Nor-Cal events will be added as the schedule solidifies. 2010/11 is going to be a huge year for Cyclocross in the USA as the build up for the 2012 Master World Championships in Louisville Kentucky grows. Then the big daddy of them all- with the UCI World Championships coming to the USA in 2013 held at the Eva Bandman park, just a mile from the centre of Louisville. The entire USA 2010/2011 Cyclocross National Calendar has been posted already. Nor-Cal played a major role in the Master racing at the 2009 USA Nationals for both the Men & Women, with multiple riders gracing the top steps of the awards podium. Odds are definitely in favor of a Nor-Cal Master racer making the podium at the World Championship race in 2012 Louisville, Kentucky. As a promoter and a racer myself, I know the demands of putting on a race series while trying to compete in Nor-Cal's extremely talent filled Cross races. For 2010 both Shane Huntoon- Livermore Series, and Rich Maile- Sacramento Series, have informed me of their plans to not be involved with promotion of their respective Cross Series. I know both of these riders will now be racing with a little extra hop in their step this coming season. Rich Maile has turned the Sacramento Series over to Brian Joder and his crew who will continue Rich's outstanding work in putting Cross racing at the State Capitol on the map. Meanwhile, Shane Huntoon will be charging at the head of the field now as a competitor while he focuses more on racing and his family- after the LARPD has decided not to allow him to run the LARPD CX races . I imagine Velo-Promo will now put together some solid East Bay Cyclocross races. I would like to personally thank both Shane & Karen Huntoon, and Rich & Sarah Maile, for their efforts in promoting Cyclocross & it has been a pleasure working with them! News from the BASP Series has Tom & Alec Simpson working on some new venues that will compliment their already strong Cross locations such as Golden Gate Park, Coyote Point, and Sierra Point. The CCCX Series is rumored to have two new locations in store for NCNCA racers. The Home Grown Cross Series in Fresno makes for great racing. I have always enjoyed the courses and atmosphere for racing Cyclocross in Fresno, and I am sure their efforts to keep the Central Valley fast in Cyclocross will succeed. While with out a doubt the Halloween Cyclocross race of the Surf City Series is one of the best times out in Northern California Cyclocross and a must do/must see event for all! Lars Boom & The 2010 Cyclocross Season

I spent some time this afternoon sprinting around the Laguna Seca Raceway track with a past World Champion of Cyclocross Lars Boom(Rabobank). Lars was in town doing some publicity work for Rabobank, and he was kind enough to take part in the twilight track circuit race we have once a month at Laguna Seca Raceway, this week hosted by Ghost Tree Racing club. Lars was throwing down some serious flyers in the Circuit race and he looks very ready for the Tour of California. He did mention that this was his first trip ever to California and he was enjoying the people and places. However he did say he felt a little jet-lag and he hopes to snap out of it before Sunday's first stage of the T.O.C. I was able to ask Lars a few quick questions on Cyclocross, as a past World Champion I really wanted to hear his thoughts on some Cyclocross related subjects. The 2010 NCNCA Cyclocross Calendar is already coming together. I must say that the upcoming season is going to be excellent for racing and there will be changes on the schedule that will shake things up just a little for Nor-Cal racers. One thing that all NCNCA racers can count on is some great racing week after week from mid September to the end of January. Also, please keep checking back to this site each week for 2010 schedule updates and other NCNCA Cross updates. I do recommend you keep a constant check to Andrew Yee's CX Magazine web site for daily updates on the great sport of Cyclocross and all things related. Please read on for a few quick thoughts on Cycloross from World Champion Lars Boom, who has been training and riding in Nor-Cal getting ready for the Tour of California...

Boom on Cross Courses: The harder the better! I showed him some of the brutal hills on the Laguna Seca Cross course I used 2 years ago, and he loved it. He muttered that Cross courses should be so hard that riders should feel trashed and fully spent after the competitions. He asked if it was muddy for the races, and he seemed genuinely disappointed when I said it was dry and fast in Nor-Cal for most Cross events except for late season races.

Boom on Sand Riding: Sand is fun! He likes natural sand sections and thinks beach sections or natural sand pits are first class. Man made sand pits can be hazardous.

Boom on Bunny Hopping: It is what it is! If there is a section that requires bunny hops, so be it. He said all racers should be able to handle their bikes and bunny hopping is a skill that should be practiced. He did say hopping is awesome for the fans, but he would not like each and every course to have sections that have boards or obstacles that require this move.

Boom on Run Ups: Bring it on! Run ups are part of the game of Cyclocross. If a venue has this option then it should be used in competition. Running in Cyclocross is very traditional and should be part of the sport in the future as well.

Boom on His Future in Cross: As of now his future is the Tour of California! That is his focus. So it seems to me he will be spending a little more time on the Road bike then his Cyclocross bike.

Lars Boom is a great race animator. He would always challenge Sven Nys and Bart Wellens and the rest of the Belgium Cyclocross stars. I admire him for his fight on the bike. I personally hope he steps back into the ring when the Cross season kicks up in the winter. Lars Boom definitely will have a impact in the racing if he decides to race Cyclocross full on in 2010.

B.A.R. Rankings Complete

The final Best All-round Rider(BAR) rankings are complete! Please review- https://sites.google.com/site/barncnca2009/current-results. It has been an amazing journey tracking the NCNCA Cross racers and Joe Miller deserves huge praise for his effort to adhere to my demands of a complete BAR rank system that tracks all division from nearly every race of the season. Joe Miller is a true mastermind of the BAR spreadsheet, and his tenacity to establish the most complete BAR rankings is exactly what I requested. In the end there were over 1800 different rider entries, and over 8000 different race scores. Congratulations to Juniors Madeline Myall(Cal Giant Inc.) & Tobin Ortenblad(Bike Trip Cyclo-Cross Team) who both claimed Junior high honors in the BAR rankings. The Elite Women's division was a run away win for Karen Brems(Webcor). Brems was on the front in every single race she entered during the year and was a deserving BAR champion. Josh Snead(HRS Rock Lobster) backed up his outstanding season last year with the overall BAR title for Elite Men this season. Snead was the B.A.S.P. Series champion and placed high in seemingly every other race he entered during the 2009/2010 season. Don Myrah(IBIS BuyCell.com) was possibly the biggest story of the 2009/10 Cross season. Mryah had the most combined points of any racer during the season. Myrah was the 35+ Masters A division BAR winner, and also finished 6th in the Elite Men's division. Brett Lambert(HRS Rock Lobster) won the 45+ Masters A division going away. Lambert posted race wins in almost each of the major Cross Series around Nor-Cal on his way to his 1st place BAR status. Kathleen Bortolussi(HRS Rock Lobster) was the Masters Women's 35+ BAR winner, and Soni Andreini-Poulsen(Velo Bella) the Masters Women's 45+ BAR champion. Joe Miller(Taleo Racing) had the most combined points in the B division. Miller scored his points in the B Men's group and the 35+ B division. The most combined points from the C division turned out to be the Aldrich couple- Angela & Doug. Congratulations to those BAR champions and the rest of top ranked BAR riders. CXSR Doyle Park - 2009/10 Cross Season On Its Last Lap- BAR RANKINGS

I had a top notch group of individuals search through the lists with a fine toothed comb and they weeded out a few incorrect point totals. HRS Rock Lobster's Brett Lambert & Webcor's Karl Ehlert were the biggest movers after the complete corrections were finalised for the Best All-around Rider rankings. Lambert now has a lock on the Masters 45+ A division, while Ehlert solidified his grasp on the overall points win for the Masters 45+ B division. Both Lambert and Ehlert have had incredible racing season for Cyclocross 2009/10. Each rider posted amazing rides during the year, strong race wins, and seemed to always be fighting the good fight out on course. I commend both Lambert and Ehlert on there success and BAR status. Final BAR rankings will be posted next week. Year long individual and team awards will follow, so please check back to the NCNCA Cross page every now and then for my year in review wrap up. CXSR will use Doyle Park for the Cyclocross seasons final dance this Saturday. Doyle Park is where the action will go off. This park is one of Santa Rosa's better venues for course layout, and I am sure everyone who takes part will be tested fully...

One To Go For BAR Rankings and the 2009-2010 NCNCA Cyclocross Season

BAR(Best All-around Rider) rankings are posted to date, please review- https://sites.google.com/site/barncnca2009/current-results. The final chance for any rider to re-shuffle the rankings will be the CXSR final at Doyle Park- http://www.bikemonkey.net/?page_id=60. After this final race of the season the Best All-around Rider totals will be complete and the year end awards for most outstanding racers can be handed out. I have assembled a panel of Nor-Cal Cross dignitaries to compile votes and opinions on which riders deserve the honor of Nor-Cal's finest Cyclocross racers for 2009-2010. The BAR Rankings definitely reflect the racing action for the entire season. There is no easy way to earn BAR points. You have to race, you have to race well, and you have to race a lot, to be ranked high on the NCNCA BAR list. A big thanks goes out to Taleo Race Team star Joe Miller who helped create the most detailed BAR rank list ever. Info on the Taleo Race Team can be found here- http://www.taleoracing.com/. A quick look at the BAR totals going into the final event of the season show most divisional rankings pretty much locked down. However some divisions can be decided in this final race. The Master Men's 45+ A division has Logan Kelsey(Team Rambuski Law), Brett Lambert(HRS Rock Lobster), and Robert Meighan(Cal Giant Inc.) all separated by only a few points. Meighan will have to defend his BAR lead, or could lose the claim to fame on the final day. The Master Men's' 45+ B division has Jeff Anderson(420 / Swamp Chicken) in striking distance of the current leader Karl Ehlert(Webcor). It will be interesting to see if there is any change in rank between the two after the final event of the year...

USA TO HOST CYCLOCROSS WORLDS IN 2013

The 2013 World Cyclo-Cross Championships will be held in Louisville, Kentucky, the UCI announced this past Friday. This is huge news for Nor-Cal racers! Because leading up to the 2013 Elite World Cyclo-Cross Championships Louisville- Kentucky will also host the Masters World Championships as well in 2012 & 2013. Nor-Cal obviously boasts some of the best Masters aged Cross racers in the world, as evident after the dominating National Championships our region posted in Bend Oregon. Northern California had impact in seemingly every Masters race during the past USA Championships. Hopefully many of the amazing Nor-Cal Women Masters will make the trip to Louisville, Kentucky in 2012 & 2013, where I can almost guarantee podium results for the fabulous Nor-Cal ladies. I also have a very strong feeling that the Nor-Cal Masters Men racers will also play key roles in Kentucky when Louisville hosts the Masters World Championships. This is very big news for Cross racing in America. I can only imagine that some traditional Cross fans and teams from Europe are not pleased with the USA hosting the biggest Cyclocross race of all in 2013. However here in America the news of Louisville hosting the Elite World's is spectacular. CONGRATULATIONS CENTRAL COAST CYCLOCROSS SERIES CHAMPIONS

Karen Brems(Webcor Builders) and Scott Chapin(HRS Rock Lobster) claimed Elite honors for the 2009-10 CCCX Cyclocross Series. The Women's Elite winner Brems had a break-out Cross campaign this season and posted three wins during the six race series. Brems was also second place in the other three races of the CCCX series. HRS Rock Lobster sponsored Jill Fator finished second place in the series standings, and Vanderkitten sponsored Haley Bean was third placed overall. The Men's Elite winner took a different route to the CCCX overall Series title. Chapin did not win any of the six CCCX Series races, yet rode very consistent all season long while making podium finishes in every event but one. Chapin rode to third place in three of the CCCX races, and second place in two of the events. These very high finishes in the speedy Men's "A" division were the key to Chapin's CCCX Series win. The CCCX all time race winner Justin Robinson(Cal Giant Inc.) ended the year ranked second place in the final point standings, yet Robinson did win three out of the five races he entered. Specialized racer Brendan O'Brien finished third overall in the always competitive CCCX Men's Elite division. Junior CCCX Series Champions were Gabriela Crowley(Cowboy Racing), Chance Tiner(Bike Trip/SCJCC), and Tobin Ortenblad(Bike Trip/SCJCC). Saturday night in Fresno, Sick promotions will host the famous "Lou" Fest Night Cyclocross race. This event is a true keeper for Nor-Cal Cross. The "Lou" Fest is a one of a kind event here in Northern California, it is night Cyclocross racing where headlights are required. Each year the folks at Sick Promotions keep dialing in the night race experience for the competitors making for an all around fun time for everyone involved. The course is lined with flashing barrier lights on the ground level. And it is always a awesome sight to see Cyclocross riders strung out in a line with headlights and handlebar lights leading the way. This will be the 6th year of the "Lou" Fest event and I highly recommend Nor-Cal Cross racers do not miss the good times in Fresno that will go down this Saturday night. On Sunday it will be Team Santa Cruz's Peak Season Cross race at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville. Peak Season pretty much describes they state of Cross racing right now! Mud will be the featured item of a menu that only Peak Season racing can bring to the table. It has been one of the most dry racing seasons for Nor-Cal Cross that I can remember, and now finally a chance to take part in some true European style Cyclocross. Team Santa Cruz is sure to put together a fine course, and they will back this up with great spirit and a fun atmosphere for racers and spectators. This event also serves as the Santa Cruz County Cyclo-Cross Championship. So major bragging rights are on the line for Santa Cruz County residents. Some very strong photos were shot from the Central Coast Series and the Sacramento Series final races this past weekend. Jeff Namba and Steve Anderson delivered the goods from two epic days of racing in Northern California. The Sacramento Series final race played out on a stellar course featuring challenging sand sections that tested bike handling and power output. Racing through deep sand can be a art form if done right and the Granite Bay course offered riders a chance to have at the beach-like conditions a few times each lap. There were also some flowing single track sections leading to long straights of wind blown paths that forced riders into groups for protection, or left a rider alone to fend for themselves against the forces of mother nature. The Central Coast Series final turned into possibly the most epic race of the 2009-10 season. Rain peppered the course during the day and created some amazing challenges for the riders who were not afraid to race in the rain. Each turn on course became an adventure and lines changed in the corners seemingly each and every lap. Bikes became covered in mud and wet sand. The constant noise of break pads grinding the rims rang through the air as racers ripped hard on the break levers to attempt to control speed in the muddy conditions. Mud races bring the best bike handlers to the front. A rider who could navigate the race route with creativity and an unconscious insight could gain and advantage on riders who kept to the common lines. Sacramento Series Final Saturday - Central Coast Series Final Sunday

It is the best of times for Cyclocross racing in Northern California. Precipitation and some winter-like weather might just bless the Nor-Cal racers and finally give the NCNCA riders a chance to race in the rain! This weekend features two outstanding race series hosting their final events for this season. Saturday is the Sacramento Series final at beautiful Granite Bay in Folsom. I have raced many times at Granite Bay, and the course has always been testing and tricky. Rich Maile and crew will undoubtedly piece together a race route that is worthy of Cross In The Capitol and the standards that have been set with their courses. Granite Bay always mixes in some sand and grass sections to spice up the racing and bring out the best in the competition. Town Series ending party set following the Granite Bay race in a local restaurant. Fun times for all!! Sunday in Northern California will have the CCCX Series final at Ft. Ord, near Monterey. The Central Coast Cyclocross Series final is always one of the most thrilling races of the year. CCCX Series winners jersey's are on the line in each and every division. The Ft. Ord course is a race route that rewards bike handling, as well as pure strength and fitness. The dirt in this portion of Ft. Ord is near perfect for cycling this time of year, and if there is rain the riding only gets better. Traction is optimal & even in wet weather the course runs fast and is always rideable due to the hard packed nature of the terrain. The final race of the CCCX Series always seems to produce action to the highest degree. The racing is at the strongest caliber possible, and the good times seem to flow for all. Please note that there is a alternate route for access to the Day Camp at Ft. Ord where the race is staged. The alternate route will be used between 8:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., as there is a running event using portions of the regular access roads during that time span. Nor-Cal Cross Racer Clu Cotter's Life Taken In Helicopter Crash

I received news today that Clu Cotter, a man who raced Cyclocross very passionately, was killed in a helicopter crash in the mountains above Fresno. Clu was a good friend to me, he showed class and determination when racing Cyclocross, and he was a true pleasure to know. Clu was always tremendously friendly to myself and anyone he came across. Clu made everyone feel very welcome when they would make the trip to Fresno to race Cross. He and I would always take time to chat and discuss his thoughts on Cyclocross in the Central Valley and beyond. Clu was a father of two boys, and he helped his son's develop great interest in cycling. As a proud dad, Clu would bring his kids to races all over Northern California, and he loved the Manzanita Park course in Prunedale. Clu was a huge supporter of the Cross racing in Fresno. He basically never missed a race. At the "Lou Night Race" in Fresno, Clu was there sporting his headlight and taking part in the competition because this guy simply loved to race Cyclocross. Night or day, it did not matter to Clu. He was a huge supporter of all that is Cyclocross. He will be sadly missed by me, and all who had the pleasure and joy to know him. USA Champion Tim Johnson Rips Apart Surf City Final- Congratulations Surf City Series Champions

Reigning USA National Champion Tim Johnson(Cannondale/CyclocrossWorld/Red Bull) put on a dominating display of Cyclocross power and finesse at the Surf City Series final race at Aptos High School today. Johnson streaked to a huge advantage after only 2 laps in his newly designed USA stars & stripes kit. The Cannondale/Red Bull sponsored rider then proceeded to extend his lead on each lap over a chase group that was shattered behind. Johnson even had time to get a Red Bull feed at the top of the run up from Nor-Cal's finest hecklers(photo above). The chase group behind featured Northern California's fastest riders such as Ben & Andy Jacques-Maynes(Bissell Pro Cycling), David Wyandt(HRS / Rock Lobster), Don Myrah(Ibis / Buy-Cell), and Justin Robinson(Cal Giant/Specialized). Johnson however was on another level on the day and in the end his smooth & fluid style thrilled the large crowd who stayed late in the day to catch a glimpse of Johnson working over Nor-Cal's best. Meridith Miller( Cal Giant) put together a equally dominating ride as Johnson in her Elite Women's division. Miller, fresh off her Silver Medal at the USA National Championships was tested by Karen Brems(Webcor) for the early part of the race. Miller then went solo on course to claim the victory by 2 minutes over the talented Brems, with Katrina Baumsteiger(Team Rambuski Law) in 3rd place at the end. The course at Aptos High School was possibly the best layout ever for that facility and produced excellent racing in all categories. Santa Rosa Saturday - Surf City Sunday - Cyclocross Racing Is Back In Style For Northern California

The next few weekends in Northern California boast a plethora of outstanding Cross races to close out the 2009-10 race season. Up first are races in Santa Rosa and Aptos which kick start the finishing flurry of Cyclocross events over the next few weeks that put a close to the Cyclocross action for another year. Saturday has the CXSR Series hosting an event at Dan Galvin Park. This venue features the original baseball diamond racing that was used for the first race ever of the CXSR Series back in February of 2008. Sunday's Surf City Series final event looks to be a very memorable day at the races for many reasons. The course at Aptos High School is very challenging. The reigning Principal Casey O'Brien, is a outstanding cyclists who competes in all aspects of bicycle racing. He runs a tight ship at Aptos High and has been generous enough to allow the Surf City crew to use his campus for their final race. This venue features elevation changes and technical challenges that make any bike race on this campus epic. Combine the challenging course with the fact that this event is the Surf City Series final, and there is surely going to be excitement and fun filled times for most everyone. Then top this all off with the presence of the current Elite Men's USA National Cyclocross Champion Tim Johnson(Cannondale) taking part in the final race of the day. Johnson is in Nor-Cal for some down time after the Nationals in Bend, and was personally called out by Justin Robinson(Cal Giant Inc.) for a school yard tussle Cyclocross style. Robinson's words were--"Johnson we will settle this at Aptos High- 1:30 p.m.- be there!". It is not a pay per view fight, but it could be, as the current USA Champion Johnson takes on all of the Nor-Cal fast men in a hostile environment. This race is going to be good. Other Nor-Cal riders to test Johnson will be Surf City Series leader David Wyandt(HRS Rock Lobster) and his team mates Josh Snead, Scott Chapin, and Chris McGovern. James Coats(Cal Giant Inc.) and Aaron Bradford(On Site Ultrasound/Enduro) are also highly ranked in the Surf City series standings and will be lined up in front of Johnson at the start. B.A.R. Rankings have been updated & the Rock Lobster Bicycles Men's Elite riders have positioned themselves as the dominate force during the 2009-10 Nor-Cal Cross season with four weekends of racing still to come on the schedule. It is the time of the season where the Northern California dirt gets soft and mud comes into play, which creates fun challenges for all. It is the "Peak Season" for Cross racing in Nor-Cal. There are competitions lined up in January that will most likely feature muddy sections and soft terrain riding that the Nor-Cal races have lacked this year. Surely the difficult riding and technical aspect of winter racing will give way for the opportunity of "Mudders" and "Foul Weather Riders" to impact the racing antics. B.A.R. Rankings have been tallied to date, and a special note must be made of Paul Sadoff's Rock Lobster Cyclocross Team which has placed 7 of its riders in the top 15 of the Men's Elite Division. The Lobster bunch holds down the top 4 placings overall in the super competitive Men's Elite Division. B.A.R. Rankings reflect the entire season of Cross racing. Paul Sadoff deserves praise for putting together such a strong group of Men's Elite racers who have attacked from the gun and battled for race wins on all fronts around Northern California. Karen Brems(Webcor) leads the Elite Women's rankings, and this is well earned. Brems has had a break-out year of Cyclocross racing and has placed herself on the sharp end of the Elite Women's races at seemingly every event she has entered. A complete report on the final B.A.R. Rankings will be logged after the last race of the 2009-10 Cross season. Christmas Cyclocross In Sonora- Saturday & Sunday- Velo Promo Style

Northern California racers will be celebrating Christmas Cyclocross in Sonora on both Sat. & Sun.- Dec. 26-27, as Velo Promo and Bob Leibold will host the holiday weekend events. Saturday's race will take place at the challenging Cover's Apple Ranch course in Tuolumne. This venue was the location of the 1993 USA National Cyclocross Championships. I have raced at Cover's Apple Ranch on many occasions, and I can say with out any doubt that this is a truly epic course. This hard and demanding route will test physical power and technical skills to the fullest. This is a race not to be missed, and the race route is maybe the most taxing course of the year. Sunday's event will go off at Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp. I have raced at this location in past years and the race route is a much more modern style circuit. The racing will be contested at a faster average speed then the Cover's course. Naturally the Velo Promo crew will seek out many obstacles in this venue to make things interesting on the competitors. There will be pavement, stairs, and grassy slopes used, thus making a circuit that is sure to produce challenges for all. I highly recommend Nor-Cal Cyclocross racers make the trip up into the foothills near Sonora to take part in these fantastic Cross events on this upcoming holiday weekend. Some of my fondest and most vivid Cyclocross memories are from battling the challenges and circuits that the Velo Promo races deliver. Bob Liebold has a special touch in putting together courses that bring out the best in the riders. Surf City Series & Sacramento Series On Tap Sunday

The Surf City Series will host their 4th race at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz this Sunday. Mike Evans, Jeff Clark, and crew are sure to produce an outstanding course at Harbor High. Having tested this venue last season, I can personally say that Harbor High is one of the better facilities for fun racing and includes all aspects that lead to a awesome race route. Team Santa Cruz will always add their special touches that make racing Cyclocorss at the Surf City Series so great. If you are near Santa Cruz this weekend be sure and make the trip to race the Surf City Series. The people who put on the race are awesome and Harbor High School is a super fun place to race. Sacramento's event on Sunday will be at Lange Twins Winery near Lodi. This event is sure to be a classic. I have witnessed first hand the growth of Cross racing in and around the State Capitol. The course designs just keep getting better, and the level of thought put into the race routes has been raised considerably over the past few years. This is evident from the outstanding results some of their best riders just produced at the U.S. Cyclocorss Nationals. Elgart, Maile, Maile, Kaiser, Ferguson, all made podium appearances in Bend Oregon. The report I recieved about this course at Lange Twins Winery is that it is sure to be a challenging route with pleasing turns and testy sections to highlight this solid venue. Another special touch the Lange Twins Winery venue will provide is Wine tasting on site. The only thing that beats Wine tasting at Cross events in Nor-Cal is Beer tasting. Kaiser Strikes Gold In Bend, Robinson & Myrah Claim Silver- Plus Photos From The USA National Cyclocross Championships In Bend Oregon

Northern California's best Cyclocross racers again rose to the occasion at the USA National Championships on day #3 of competitions. Cody Kaiser(Cal Giant Inc.) led the way, snatching the coveted Gold Medal and the Stars & Stripes jersey in the Junior Men's 17-18 division. Kaiser stamped his authority on the event with aggressive racing to earn the victory by a large margin of 47 seconds on the line. Kaiser is ranked as the #1 Junior Cross racer in the USA and all of Northern California is proud if his great racing accomplishments. When a Junior wins a National Title it usually is a huge reflection of his family's support of racing, his community's cycling activities, and his regions racing & competition level which raised the riders game to be best in the USA. Kaiser benefited from all of the previously listed items, plus huge team support from Cal Giant Inc. and team director Anthony Gallino, to become one of the the best Cyclocross racers in America. Congratulations to the entire Kaiser family and Cody for living the dream and fighting so hard to be the best! Previous National Masters Champions Justin Robinson(Cal Giant Inc.) and Don Myrah(Ibis/BuyCell.com) both posted stellar rides in the brutal Bend Oregon weather conditions to snatch the Silver Medal in their respected division. Robinson was a mere 4 seconds away from victory after a thrilling dual for the title in the Masters Men's 35-39 division. Myrah had to hold off a hard charging pair of riders by 7 seconds to secure his 2nd place finish in the Masters Men's 40-44 division. Robinson and Myrah are Nor-Cal legends of Cross. They both displayed tenacity and determination on the biggest stage of Cyclocross in Bend Oregon, and they both can add another National Championship Silver Medal to their growing collection. Josh Snead(HRS Rock Lobster) had a amazing ride in the Masters Men's 30-34 division with a 4th place finish. Snead just missed the Bronze Medal in this group by 11 seconds on the line. Jeremey Ferguson(Cal Giant Inc.) proved himself on the highest level in Bend Oregon with a stellar 5th place podium appearance in the U-23 contest. This division always boasts some of the fastest up & coming riders in America, and Ferguson showed us all he is for real as one of the USA's elite racers. Others to ride to top 10 placings on another amazing day of results at the USA National Championships for Northern California were, past National Masters Champion Todd Hoefer(Cal Giant Inc.) who was 6th place in the Masters Men's 40-44 division. Hoefer missed the final podium spot in that age group by only 2 seconds at the finish of the 41:00 minute race. Jim Gentes(Team Rambuski Law) was 6th in the Masters Men's 50-54 division. And Chris McGovern finished 7th place in the Masters Men's 35-39 division. This edition of the USA Nationals could be considered the best ever from Northern California racers. I count 4 Gold, 4 Silver, and 4 Bronze Medals earned by our regions best and most talented riders. This only proves that Cyclocross is King in Nor-Cal and our region is truly one of the most outstanding area's in all of America for talented riders and great races. Epic conditions led to epic racing.....

Just looking at the course shows how challenging the conditions were. Howe and the rest of the Northern California Masters Women simply owned the Nationals. Gold Medals in the age groups 30-34, 35-39, 40-44. Are you serious?? YES! Simply dominating were the Nor-Cal Master Women. Karen Brems also grabbed the Bronze medal in the 45-49 division in what could be called the greatest ever Masters results by a region at the USA Cyclocross Nationals. The awards announcers must have been freaking out wondering what the heck is in the water the the Nor-Cal Masters Women have been consuming all year.....

Another Masters Women's podium appearance was delivered from Sacramento's Sarah Maile(Ventana MTB) with 5th place in the 30-34 divison. Allison Baumhefner of San Rafael was also another Masters Women racer from Nor-Cal to make podium. Baumhefner was 5th place in the 40-44 division. Carmel's Beverly Chaney(Team Roaring Mouse) also made a podium show with 4th in the 45-49 division. All in all, 7 Female racers stood on the podium representing Nor-Cal in the Mastesr division. Simply amazing.....

Alan Coats was in a dog fight for the Gold Medal in the Masters Men's 45-49 division. At previous National Cyclocross Championships Northern California has been known for their super fast- world class Masters Men racers. With seemingly each year different Masters age racers stepping up to grab Medals from the NCNCA region. This year Nor-Cal did not disappoint for the legend of the Northern California Masters Men with 5 riders making the cherished podium appearance. Coats, Robinson, Elgart, Snead, & Myrah all delivered the goods and climbed onto the Nationals podium in the Master division....

Nor-Cal Women Dominate! Kerry Barnholt, Gina Hall, & Barbara Howe All Claim Gold Medals At USA National Cyclocross Championships

Gold Medals and the Stars & Stripes jersey of the current National Cyclocross Champion were claimed by three of Nor-Cal's finest racers today in Bend, Oregon. Kerry Barnholt(Scott/Ritchey), Gina Hall(Cal Giant Inc.), and Barbara Howe(Vanderkitten) all raced to decisive victories on what could be considered one of the best single day tally's ever for Northern California Cyclocross at the USA National Championships. It was obvious from the beginning of the season that the the Women's division for Nor-Cal Cross was at another level outright. New resident in Nor-Cal Kerry Barnholt had a huge impact on the racing, rising the level of competition for everyone to match. Combine this with the return of Gina Hall & Carmen D'Aluisio to action, the level of talent was at a all time high for Women's racing in the NCNCA region. Today in Bend Oregon the Women or Nor-Cal dominated with Barnholt, Hall, and Howe all standing on the top step of the podium when racing was complete. Karen Brems(Webcor) also posted an outstanding result taking the Bronze Medal in the Masters Women's 45-49 division. Other Nor-Cal Women racers who contributed to the podium grab from our regional racers were Sarah Maile(Ventana) with a 5th place in the Masters Women's 30-34 group. Beverly Chaney(Team Roaring Mouse) with 4th in the Masters Women's 45-49 division. And Allison Baumhefner of San Rafael with a 5th place ride in the 40-44 division. Congratulations to these outstanding athletes on their incredible accomplishments this season! Northern California had a banner day in Bend, besides the three Gold Medlas & one Bronze medal won in the Masters Women's divisions. Past National Masters Champion James Coats battled to the Silver Medal in the Masters Men 45-49 division. Rich Maile(Sacramento Cyclocross) grabbed the Bronze Medal in the Men's Single Speed division. Congratulations goes out to those two amazing Men from Nor-Cal! Other racers to have outstanding top 10 finishes in bend Oregon toady were- Madeleine Myall(Cal Giant Inc.), Julie Bates(Team Roaring Mouse), Katrina Baumsteiger(Team Rambuski Law), Jill Fattor(HRS Rock Lobster), Hollie McGovern(Sert / Sho Air). I would like to personally give a shout out to these riders listed on this report and all the others who raced today, each rider made today possibly the best day ever for Nor-Cal Cross on a National level. I count 3 Gold medals, 1 Silver, 2 bronze, & 8 riders total being called up on the podium, and 13 riders in the top 10 of their races. Congratulations to all!...

LARPD Final In Livermore Saturday & Fresno Homegrown Cross Final Sunday. Photos Of The Week- Paul Doran's BASP Final Photos

It is sure to be frigid & cold for the large group of Nor-Cal Cyclocross racers who are contesting the USA National Championships in Bend-Orgeon over the next few days. Meanwhile, for local Northern California Cross racing the competitions will be run under a winter storm warning, with strong chances of precipitation and high winds. This adverse weather forecast could make for some epic racing, and I highly recommend Nor-Cal racers to get out there and have at it in some wet racing conditions. Shane Huntoon is sure to put a solid course together for his LARPD final race in Livermore on Saturday. Shane's courses have really improved over the past few years, and his creativity in the race routes makes for fun and challenging racing for all. This is the final race of the season for the LARPD East Bay Sereis, so last call for anyone wanting to Cyclocross in Livermore. Sunday is the final race of Fresno's Homegrown Cyclocross Series. I have personally raced Cyclocross in Fresno over the past few years, and it is always a pleasure. The courses usually had a great feel to the rider and the terrain used for the routes made for great riding. Even when I cycled there under some strong storms the racing never skipped a beat. The Central California Off-Road Cyclists of Fresno do a outstanding job of putting together quality race routes, excellent organization of the events, and a good vibe for the Cross racing. This weekend features a excellent chance to race Cyclocross in testy winter conditions. So be sure and take advantage of this bad weather forecast and have a good time racing Cyclocross in Livermore & Fresno. USA Cyclocross Nationals Report From Bend Oregon

The USA Cyclocross National Championships are taking place on the "West Coast" for this season, and next year as well. I am positive that this will be the largest contingent of Nor-Cal racers ever making a pilgrimage to the USA Cross Championships to compete for the coveted Stars & Stripes winners jersey. Bend Oregon is where Nor-Cal is guaranteed to have a impact on the racing and hopefully some of this regions strongest riders will bring back the precious Gold Medal. Northern California riders have always played leading roles in different divisions over the years at past National Championship Cross events. I truly believe that with the tremendously large number of Nor-Cal riders signed up for the racing, the podium positions will be filled with multiple riders from this area. Gold Medals are very hard to come by, as there is only one race winner for each division. Yet the podium placings should have numerous representatives from Nor-Cal. Most likely a few lucky riders will reach the top step of the podium and bring back the Stars & Stripes jersey home to the NCNCA region. Murray says-

We took a quick walk around today until our wee feet froze! It looks like a fun course mostly flat and wide open in the first part with some swooping up down 180 turns and off camber challenges in the second part. The reports of 1ft snow are exaggerated - there's 4-5 inches snow and it's minus 14 deg tonight but local forecast has it warming thru the rest of the week to 36 on Sunday. Snow has been mechanically blown off the course on the grass parts towards the Brewery. The ground doesn't feel super hard underneath here, but there is a tricky runup before turning back onto the start/finish straight which you can neither ride or run up easily due to snow and camber with a tricky off camber remount.

On the waste ground towards the pits it is quite frozen and they may not be able/intending to move snow off there due to rough bumpy ground. Local bike shop guys told us the organizers plan to salt the slightly uphill start/finish roadway for safety. First turn will be interesting with hard left over full size curb into a narrow turn between some sapling trees.

Checkout the steps in the brewery area - 23 of them - hope they put down some carpet or similar as the edges are real sharp if you should slip.
Bend is beautiful. The Deschutes Jubelale is tasty! Tomorrow we pre-ride.

The BASP Series is complete for 2009. The popular Cross Series wrapped up its racing at Coyote Point on a course that was lengthy in distance and featured all aspects of Super Prestige course design. The famous beach section that forces most riders to dismount and run through the sand is always a crowd favorite of this race route. There are also equal parts on course of dirt trails and pavement bike paths that balance out the overall feel of the racing for the riders. LARPD And CXSR On Saturday- BASP Final On Sunday- Plus Photos From Veronika Lenzi

The final race of the B.A.S.P. Series will go off at CCCP CycloCross- Coyote Point this Sunday. Many of the divisional series points battles are going down to the final race. Personally, I have been in many points battles for final rank placing in different series over the years. I know the pressure of a series long points race coming down to the final event of the series. It is like a shoot out in the Wild West where only the victor is left standing. I can imagine that some riders are taking things very seriously when it comes to that final podium call and ones name etched in stone forever as B.A.S.P. Series Champion. Here is a look at some of the points races that are coming down to the final race & which rider crosses the finish line first to propel themselves into immortality as a BASP Series Champion. Cat. A Men- This division will come down to the final race between HRS Rock Lobster riders Josh Snead & Chris McGovern. These two riders are dead even on points, so which ever one of the two crosses the finish line first should win the overall. McGovern has the head to head series lead topping Snead in 3 out of the 4 races. However Snead has positioned himself even on points going into the final, and all out race warfare between the two seems to be in order. The big question here is will Rock Lobster head honcho Paul Sadoff make the call who he feels should claim the overall, or does Sadoff let the two talented riders fight it out themselves. My opinion is it will be a dog fight on course to decide the Elite Men's champion.

Single Speed A- Timmy Cannard(Buy Cell.com) looks set to claim the series overall. Cannard is the man behind Buy Cell.com and he has a team mate right behind him in points. I look for Cannard to control things on course and have his team riders escort him to the finish to wrap up the BASP Single Speed crown.

Cat B Men- Isaiah Rapko(Team Oakland) has dominated the B division from race #1 and looks set to stand on the top step of the podium in this division.

Single Speed B- Sheila Moon's Evan Sarna has owned the top spot of this division all season long. I do not see this fast rider faltering on the final day.

Cat C Men- Oh No! Doug Aldrich(Team Sys Group) & Alex Wick(Davis Bike Club) are all square on points going into the final. Stay out of their way and let them decide this between themselves on course please!

Junior Women- Madeleine Myall(Cal Giant Inc.)- enough said!

Juniors 10-14- Team Roaring Mouse has a keeper in Ryan Grant. This kid is fast and is locked in to win the overall.

Juniors 15-18- Brandon Chan(Sycip) & Julian Eisen(SERT/Sho-air) have been going back and forth all series long in the points rankings. Eisen needs to make up a few spots on Chan or the Sycip rider is set to claim top honors in this division.

Master 55+ John Elgart(Webcor) is undefeated. Can he run the table?

Cat C Women- Jamie Schoenborn(Roaring Mouse) has been unstoppable this season. My money is on Schoenborn to be called to the top step of the final GC podium.

Cat A Women- Sarah Maile(Ventana) is 5 points down to Karen Brems(Webcor) going into the final. I think these two talented riders will be marking each other very heavily during the proceedings. It is up to Maile to get a few riders in between her and Brems at the finish. Yet Brems will surely go down swinging to claim the overall!

Cat B Women- The Siamese Twins of the Women's B division are Michelle Monroe(Joselyn's) & Courtney Shipman(Bike Station Aptos). These two strong riding Women have been virtually neck and neck all season long. Who ever gets to the line first could be the overall champ. It is going to be a cat fight for sure!

Master Women 35+ A- Linda Elgart(Webcor) has been very consistent all season long and is set to win the division. I look for Elgart to ride a very controlled race and roll into the overall title. Or she may simply throw it down on the other 35+ Women and go out with a win in the final race to prove she is number 1.

Master 45+ A- Rob Meighan(Cal Giant Inc.) and Brett Lambert(HRS Rock Lobster have been the story of this age group all season long. I look for a fierce fight on course to decide the division champion. Meighan leads by a scant 2 points, so who ever crosses the finish line first between these two warriors will most likely be series king.

Master 35+ A- Don Myrah(IBIS-Buy Cell.com) should claim this division because he has about a 20 point lead over 2nd place ranked Steve Reaney(Cal Giant Inc.). Myrah has been awesome in 2009 and this is a rider who knows how to close the deal.

Master 35+ B- Chris Donahue(Vertical Pandas) has a 8 point lead over Mike Morgan(Sycip) & Ian Moore(Berkeley Bike Club), will it be enough??

Master 45+ B- Zachary W. Beekler(Pen Velo/Pomodoro) has used his MTB Bike to dominate this division. I look for the hard charging Beekler to be on a proper Cross bike very soon.

NCNCA District Champions emerged from the Cyclocross spectacle of B.A.S.P. Golden Gate Park this past Sunday. Nor-Cal Cyclocross racing continues to grow by leaps and bounds year after year, and the riders who stepped up and claimed race wins in each and every division at B.A.S.P. GGP are all outright champions in their own right. However, NCNCA Champions were only awarded for the Juniors, Elites, Master Men 35+, 45+ and 55+, and Women 35+ and 45+. Cody Kaiser(Cal Giant Inc.) is a Cyclocross star and is one of the most outstanding Junior Cross racers in America. Kaiser claimed the 4th position on the podium in the Elite Men's division at Golden Gate Park....

Elite Men's District Champion Christopher Jones is for real. This talented rider backed up last years Golden Gate Park Elite win with another win in 2009. Jones was far and away the best rider at GGP winning the Elite race by 75 seconds.....

Aaron Bradford(OnSite Ultrasound) demonstrates that skills lead to success in Cyclocross. Bradford again proved himself as one of the best Cross riders in Nor-Cal taking the bronze medal in the Men's Elite division....

Justin Robinson(Cal Giant Inc.) was the 2008 Elite Men's District Cyclocross champion. At Golden Gate Park Robinson displayed huge amounts of power on the soft, loose traction, climbs the course had to offer. Robinson could ride most of the difficult uphill sections where basically every other rider needed to get off and run. Robinson claimed the silver medal on the day in the Men's Elite division.....

Barb Howe used huge support from the crowd, tremendous physical strength and world class riding skill to claim the Gold medal for the NCNCA District Championship in the Elite Women's division....

Sacramento's Sarah Maile(Ventana MTB) worked her way on to the podium at Golden Gate Park grabbing the final spot on offer, 5th place in the Elite Women's category. Maile has demonstrated over the past few years that Cyclocross is one of her best disciplines on the bicycle as well as MTB racing and Road racing.....

Karen Brems(Webcor Builders) used her bronze medal ride in the Elite Women's race at GGP to take over the B.A.S.P. lead going into the final race of the series next weekend at Coyote Point. Brems has had possibly the most consistent Cyclocross season of all Nor-Cal Elite Women racers...

Janel Lodge(Blackmarket Racing) was involved in one of the most epic races for a District Championship on the day in the Women's 45+ division. Lodge thrilled the crowd with full on fight and just missed getting the gold medal....

It was Linda Elgart who topped the hard charging Lodge to claim the NCNCA District Championship in the Women's 45+ division. Elgart is a legend of Nor-Cal bicycle racing and she added another title to her already very full resume of race wins. Elgart beat Lodge by only 3 seconds to own the NCNCA District Championship for 2009.....

Studs!! John Elgart and Frank Cuaresma(Cal Giant Inc.) finished 1-2 in the Men's 55+ Championship race. Elgart was the winner on the day.....

Ann Fitzsimmons(Fox Racing) is one of Nor-Cal's most gifted all-around cyclists. Fitzsimmons used her talent and fitness to ride to the Women's 35+ NCNCA District Championship win at GGP....

Don Myrah was the deserving winner of the super competitive Master Men's 35+ division. Myrah was the most marked rider in the 35+ field at the start line, he even sported the B.A.S.P. series leaders jersey. He backed up his reputation with a race win and a NCNCA District Championship to add to his stellar 2009 Cross season....

First Look At B.A.R. Rankings- NCNCA District Championships This Sunday At Golden Gate Park

The first release of the 2009-10 Best All-round Rider(BAR) rankings are ready for review. Final totals will be complete at the last race of the season as there is still a lot of Cross racing left to be contested on the calendar. Link- http://sites.google.com/site/barncnca2009/current-results. Taleo Racing rider Joe Miller and myself have been hard pressed to deliver the most complete BAR rankings in the history of the NCNCA. Each division is being honored in the rankings and over 1300 Nor-Cal Cyclocross racers have received ranking points so far this season. The 2009 NCNCA District Cyclocross Championships will take place this coming Sunday at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The Bay Area Super Prestige crew is sure to host an epic District Championship competition at one of the City of San Francisco's most pristine and beautiful parks. This event will also serve as race #4 of the B.A.S.P. Series. Personally, I look for many of the riders who have established a high BAR ranking so far this season to play a major role in the races on Sunday. BAR rankings truly show which riders have had the biggest influences on the proceedings in Nor-Cal Cyclocross. The District Championships will most likely mirror the BAR rankings in one way or another. Good luck to everyone who races at Golden Gate Park! Quick notes on the BAR Rankings- One of the most dominate riders of their division so far is Junior Female racer Madeline Myall(California Giant/Specialized) who has won every race she has entered this season except one leading into the District race. I applaud Madeline on her great riding and I applaud Maxime Schimmel(Bicycle Trip) of Santa Cruz for being the one rider to top Myall. In the BAR rankings for the Elite Women's division, Karen Brems(Webcor), Kerry Barnholt(Scott/Ritchey), and Stella Carey(HRS Rock Lobster) have established themselves as the top 3 going into the District Championship. The Elite Men's division was always going to be a battle between HRS Rock Lobster & Cal Giant Inc. for the 2009 BAR ranking season. Surely this fierce rivalry will come to a head at the District Championship race. As of now HRS Rock Lobster is controlling the BAR rankings, holding the top 4 placings and putting 7 riders in the top 15. Cal Giant Inc. is led by Justin Robinson, with "Young Guns" Cody Kaiser and Jeremy Ferguson also able to rip off strong rides at any notice. It was a very huge weekend of racing before the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Nor-Cal Cyclocross racers can now feast on a little Turkey and give thanks to all the promoters for so many great events. Weekend Racing In Nor-Cal- The Action Will Be Non Stop!

It will be a very full weekend of racing this coming Saturday & Sunday for Nor-Cal Cyclocross. The NCNCA District Championships and USA National Championships are right around the corner, so it is now time to step up and have at it on both Saturday & Sunday for Northern California Cyclocross racing. The competitions kick off on Sat. Nov 21 with race #6 of the LARPD Series in Livermore. One of the more interesting events will be the Cow Palace Cross in San Francisco. This Cross race is sure to be action packed, as the event is revolving around the SF Bike Expo. This is a big stage for Cyclocross in this area and I am hoping the best for this race to be a success. There will be all sorts of cycling activities going off indoors and outdoors of the Cow Palace this day, such as a Pro Invitational Showdown Jumping Contest. I have been hitting the jumps recently with Jamie Goldman, who is one of the best Pro jumpers in the world, and he says this event is going to be off the charts! Cyclocross racing will be one of the featured events of the day as well. I am sure the crowds will truly be amazed at the speed and style the sport of Cyclocross racing brings out of it's athletes. In Reno there will be the 4th race in the Sagebrush Series at Clayton Middle School. Sunday has two of the most competitive Nor-Cal race series firing off events. Cross in the Capitol will host their race #3 at Discovery Park near downtown Sacramento. I had the pleasure of racing at this venue last season and the course was put together very well and a true test of rider and machine. Lastly, the Central Coast Cyclocross Series will be hosting their race at Manzanita Park in Prunedale. The CCCX course at Manzanita Park has been a Nor-Cal standout for many years. The race route is challenging in all respects, and for the fans there is perfect spectator viewing of some of Nor-Cal's finest Cross racers. I do recommend you race this weekend. To get your game firing on all cylinders as this is the thick of Cross season. Big Bash In Brisbane!

The Big Bash in Brisbane for B.A.S.P.'s #3 "night race" had epic action in each and every category. Cyclocross racing in Nor-Cal is very much alive and kicking, and this past weekends "night race" raised the level up a few notches. One of the best shows of the after sunset racing was between Kerry Barnholt(Scott/Ritchey) & Barbara Howe(Vanderkitten) who put on the duel of the night, highlighting the Elite Women's super competitive status in Nor-Cal racing for 2009. Howe showed incredible speed during the contest, and when push came to shove the only Elite Women's rider to match her pedal stroke for pedal stroke was Barnholt. It came down to a bike throw for the win and video review to determine which rider earned the victory. In the end a spent Barnholt prevailed for the win. Kathleen Hannon(Hunter/Freewheel) also rode a stellar race finishing only 14 seconds behind the two leaders for third place. Aaron Bradford(Onsite Ultrasound) backed up his previous weeks CCCX win, with a commanding win in Northern California's one and only night Cyclocross race. Bradford had to separate himself from the entire HRS Rock Lobster Men's Elite team for his solo win. Bradford used fitness, form, & skill to top the best riders from Nor-Cal and abroad. Bardford was so clean when bunny hopping over the final B.A.S.P. board section on course, it looked incredibly smooth and natural. It was deserving he was able to distance himself from the chasers and claim the win. Chris McGovern(HRS/Rock Lobster) & Josh Snead(HRS Rock Lobster) led the chasers home claiming 2nd & 3rd place respectively on the night. My hat is off to all the racers and fans who made this special "night race" in Nor-Cal so sweet. Each division was stacked with record breaking numbers of riders. Fan support was off the hook, making for an awesome time at the races for spectators as well as competitors. This coming Saturday night is the B.A.S.P. #3 event at Sierra Point. The B.A.S.P. night race was a huge success in it's first run last season. I have no doubt that the action will be better then ever for the 2009 version. During the past 8 weeks of racing Don Myrah(Ibis/Buy cell.com) has ran off one of the more dominating streaks ever in Nor-Cal Cyclocross racing, by winning the 35+ Masters "A" division races non stop and going undefeated over this time period. This was no regular romp of one rider simply dominating a non competitive division. No, Myrah's legendary 2 month span of control was put forth on the most competitive division of all Nor-Cal Cross. This is a Master's division where each week there could be multiple riders in the field who have claimed medals at the USA National Championships. However, this past Sunday at CCCX #4, the 4 time Elite National Champion Myrah finally tasted defeat as the best Master's team in the nation hit him with their A+ line up. Cal Giant Inc. has arguably the very best Masters team in the United States of America. Past National champions Todd Hoefer & James Coates headline the program. There is also multiple time USA championship medalist and World's medalist Henry Kramer, as well as Gannon Myall, Anastasio Flores, and Eric Bustos. Yet it took all of these studs and the ace card in Cal Giant Inc. director Anthony Gallino's deck of Masters team members Justin Robinson, who this year is eligible for the 35+ USA crown, to put an abrupt stop to Don Myrah's tear through the Nor-Cal 35+ Masters division. Robinson was a surprise entry at the CCCX race in the 35+ "A" division, and the entire Cal Giant Inc. team turned the tables on Myrah to stop his win streak which lasted nearly 2 months. To his credit Myrah still finished 2nd on the day. However, Cal Giant Inc. controlled the racing and placed 5 of their racers in the top 7, but most importantly got the win from Justin Robinson. The action started out with Todd Hoefer pulling off his fastest start ever and attacking Myrah right from the gun, ripping off an almost psychotic fast paced first lap. Then James Coates hit Myrah in the gut trying to soften him up for the heavy weight assault still to come from Robinson. In the end it was Robinson's technical skills of bunny hopping the boards, combined with Robinson's pure brute strength that was displayed each time up the brutal run up, that finally put the knock out punch on Myrah's winning streak. Cal Giant Inc. director Anthony Gallino has assembled the finest group of Masters racers in America, and it took his full line up to end one of the most outstanding winning streaks in recent history of Nor-Cal Cyclocross racing. Myrah's lack of "air time" over the boards forced him to play catch up to the super skilled Robinson each lap, and in the end Cal Giant Inc. derailed his win streak....

Gina Hall has made a strong comeback to Cross racing in 2009. Sporting the Cal Giant Inc. team kit, Hall just missed the CCCX race win- losing only to Karen Brems(Webcor). Brems has been the most consistent Elite Women this season in Northern California Cyclocross racing...

The Toro Park course featured many high speed turns, a demanding run up, some tricky technical sections, and was rated highly by many riders....

Big Weekend Of Racing Ahead- CXSR, LARPD, Sagebrush on Saturday.- CCCX Toro Park on Sunday

The racing action really heats up this weekend in Northern California with multiple events on tap for Cyclocross enthusiasts. The Santa Rosa Cyclocross Series opens up their season of racing at the Youth Community Park course. Cyclocross in Santa Rosa has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years. It is great to see the City of Santa Rosa backing these Cross races from Carlos Perez & Bike Monkey. Santa Rosa is setting a standard for other area's in Nor-Cal to use local parks for Cyclocross racing. Other venues for CXSR will be Franklin Park, Dan Galvin Park, & Doyle Park. Also on Saturday, Shane Huntoon is sure to have a terrific lay out planned for his LARPD course in Livermore. Huntoon has worked hard to put together awesome courses that are well marked and challenging. Livermore is a hot bed for Cross, and Shane & Karen Huntoon are the driving forces that provide the great races during the season. Shane mentioned he has a few surprises up his sleeve for this Saturday's LARPD race, so I am sure it will be great racing for everyone. Saturday in Reno, Nevada, is the Sagebrush Series race #3. This race will be contested at one of my favorite venues Hidden Valley Park. This park has hosted many Cross races over the years and it is always a pleasure to race there. The Nor-Cal racing action then continues on Sunday at Toro Park near Salinas where CCCX #4 will take place. The Central Coast Cross race at Toro Park is sure to be a instant classic, as a new course is being used that will go down in history as one of the best routes ever for that series. The front area of Toro Park will be turning from a no bicycle zone into a Cyclocross bicycle haven where the racing action will surely shock and awe other park users who are not used to giving up this prime real estate to cyclists. Conditions at Toro Park are perfect for cycling and the race route will be stellar for racers as well as spectators. Surf City Success

The Surf City's Velo Bella Halloween race, and the following days Surf City Dia de los Muertos classic were strongly successful events over the weekend. Mike Evans and his crew put quite the awesome courses together at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, and the racing action was tremendously fast in all the divisions. Justin Robinson(Cal Giant Inc.) made the County Fairgrounds his own personal playground on his way to claiming victories on both days in the Men's Elite division. Over the past 10 years or so, Justin Robinson has been Northern California's most consistent Cyclocross bad ass! He is the dominator year after year plain and simple. Robinson uses brute strength, bike handling skills, and constant racing to set the standard extremely high for all to match in the Nor-Cal Men's Elite division. Other Elite Men in Northern California basically try to just reach Robinson's level of Cyclocross game. They then know their season is successful if they top the hard charging man from Bonny Doon. Robinson is not afraid to go up against the best racers in the USA and he travels during the year to some of the most hotly contested races on the schedule. Robinson is a National Champion in Cross and should again be a factor in his new age group at this years Nationals in Oregon. Surf City Double At The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds

Sabine Dukes and Velo Bella will again be hosting their classic Halloween Cyclocross race this Saturday as part of Surf City's two day festival of Cross. Then on Sunday Team Santa Cruz will take over from Velo Bella and the dastardly Dia De Los Muertos Race will finish out the big weekend of racing at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville. The Halloween Cyclocross extravaganza by Velo Bella is always a awesome time, with the Costume race a crowd favorite for sure. There will no doubt be lots of surprises and fun activities taking place during the Halloween day Cross race. I highly recommend making this event as each year it just gets better and better from the Girls & Guys who represent Velo Bella. Then after all the scary fun action of Saturday's Halloween race, the Dia De Los Muertos Race will shock and awe Cross racers from Northern California. Northern California Cyclocross racers are very fortunate to have excellent photographers who are extremely talented filming their races. Cyclocross racing tends to deliver many photo opportunities, as the racers are literally giving their utmost effort while being challenged by terrain variations plus natural and man made obstacles. The racing circuits are usually no more then 2 miles in length. This provides numerous laps for the riders in each race, and thus numerous photo possibilities for the film workers. Cross races always produce a chance for quality photos of the athletes doing their thing, yet it is still up to the photographers to catch these moments in living color. B.A.S.P. #2- Big Race By The Bay

Kerry Barnholt(Scott/Ritchey) and Josh Snead(HRS Rock Lobster) cranked out strong wins in the Women's & Men's Elite divisions on a testy course at Coyote Point today. It was a picture perfect day for racing on a stellar course that really tested technical skills and power output. The B.A.S.P. event was huge in turn out, with 136 riders in the "C" Men's division alone. That is most likely a Nor-Cal record for riders in one division. I can remember many, many years ago when most Nor-Cal races did not even have 136 riders total! All in all, around 600 Cross racers lined up for the challenge at hand and were greeted by great crowd support, a beautiful day, plus some fun riding. Congratulations to all who raced! B.A.S.P. #2 This Sunday!

Tom Simpson has been sending out some good info on the upcoming Bay Area Super Prestige race this Sunday at Coyote Point. Regarding the course: Coyote Point course – we are saving the beach and the flats of Coyote Point for our traditional December date – this weekend’s circuit will be on the knoll above the beach but featuring some old friends we haven’t visited since 2002. Regarding the course conditions: Course soil conditions since the last couple of drenchings – pretty soft. Overall this will be an up ‘n down course with 3 different pavement sections to give you a breather before more of the “work” stuff comes. On his action zones: TRP Brake Zone will consist of a UCI-legal sandpit (that’s one that hasn’t been purposely built just for the race) and run-up. Our SRAM barricades will have 2 locations, either of them potentially hop-able, if you’re able. On the parking and road access issues: Caltrans has at least another year to go before the Peninsula Ave. exit project is completed. So - listed below are the available access roads to get to Round 2 of the Bay Area Super Prestige Cyclocross Series,presented by Cannondale! When coming to Coyote Point from the north (San Francisco), use Highway101 South. Take the Poplar Avenue exit. Turn right onto Humboldt until Peninsula Avenue. Turn right onto Peninsula Avenue. Go over the freeway, and then circle around and into the Park.When coming to Coyote Point from the south (San Jose), use Highway 101 North. Take the Dore Avenue exit. Lion Of Fairfax & CCCX - Photos Of The Week

It was an incredible weekend of racing action this past Saturday & Sunday, with two strong events testing Nor-Cal Cyclocross racers to the maximum. The Lion Of Fairfax event was very well attended and the course produced some outstanding racing. Devon Haskell(Velo Bella) delivered another victory in her maiden year of Northern California Cross racing. Sarah Kerlin(HRS Rock Lobster) and Kathleen Hannon(Hunter/Freewheel) rounded out the Women's Elite top 3 in Fairfax. The Men's Elite race featured some very tight racing, and in the end it was HRS Rock Lobster's Josh Snead who posted another overall win in the Lion Of Fairfax event. Snead has won multiple times at the Fairfax classic. Snead's team mate David Wyandt claimed 2nd place on the day, while racing legend Ned Overend(Specialized) finished third in the very strong Elite field. 1990 MTB World Champion Ned Overend is 54 years young, and makes Don Myrah look like a baby. This result by Overend truly shows age does not matter when it comes to World Class talent on a bicycle. Overend has raced Cyclocross in Northern California at selected events over the past few years, and just shows you never know who might take to course in Nor-Cal Cyclocross events. Sunday's CCCX race at Toro park was also a classic Cyclocross event. The course was in top shape and featured a few selective spots that really quizzed a riders fitness, strength, fortitude, and bike handling ability. Any loss of power or control on course was costly in the riders final placing. Karen Brems(Webcor) & Sarah Maile(Ventana MTB) put on quite the show at the head of affairs in the Women's Elite race. Brems claimed victory after fending off multiple attacks from Maile. Stella Carey(HRS Rock Lobster) made third place on the demanding & fun riding course. Cody Kaiser(Cal Giant Inc.) & Scott Chapin(HRS Rock Lobster) got mixed up in a serious tussle for the Elite Men's win, with both riders launching attacks and surges and constantly animating the race. Each rider was vigorously cheered on by their respective camps, but in the end it was "Young Gun", kid- Cody Kaiser who claimed the Elite race win. Justin Robinson(Cal Giant Inc.) was in the mix early before blowing up and having a off day at the office. Robinson barely held off Josh Snead by seven seconds for third place on the day. Racing This Weekend- Sat. Lion Of Fairfax, Sun. Central Coast Cyclocross

This weekend the Cyclocross racing in Nor-Cal is featuring two outstanding events, Saturday's Lion Of Fairfax & Sunday's Central Coast Cylcoross Series at Toro Park. Certainly the heavy rain this past Tuesday will have somewhat of an effect of the ground condition, however it has been so dry for so long that Dave Carr's mud index will not come into play just quite yet. Saturday, The Lion Of Fairfax race will be contested on the grounds of the White Hill Middle School. The course will be very challenging, and the race route has received care and maintenance from the Ross Valley School District. This Cross Classic supports the local school and brings great Cross racing to the town of Fairfax. Sunday, the Central Coast Cyclocross Series will go off at Toro Park near Salinas. Toro Park is a awesome place to ride bikes and in the past has hosted Cross races, XC races, as well as DH races. The Cyclocross course on Sunday is a treat to ride and one of its features is a smooth flowing portion of trail that is a pleasure to cycle in any situation. Two different courses will be used at Toro Park for the CCCX Series in 2009, and each course is very spectator friendly and will test Nor-Cal Cyclocross racers full on. Kerry Barnholt(Scott/Ritchey) & Andy Jacques-Maynes(Bissell) ripped off outstanding Elite wins at Surf City #1, while Jeremy Ferguson(Cal Giant Inc./Specialized) & Joan Gregg(Squadra Abruzzo) did the same in Sacramento. Nor-Cal Cyclocross racing continues to grow and the level of competition is at a all time high. A huge "thank you" goes out to all the people who put on the events to facilitate the growth of the sport. Behind the scenes are the promoters who work long hours to prepare & produce events week after week. Constant racing opportunities allow Northern California Cyclocross athletes a means to develop skills and gain knowledge from on course racing experiences. It is now 8 weeks until the National Championships in Bend, Oregon. The non stop race action in Nor-Cal always seems to propel multiple riders into form for Nationals. Straight to the point- Cross in Nor-Cal is top notch, serious, and produces some of the best racers in America. However, week after week, one of the major themes to the racing is riders should have fun and enjoy the competition. Cross is challenging and builds cycling fitness & skills fast, but most of all the Cross scene in Nor-Cal is meant to be fun....

Surf City #1 - Sacramento #2 On Tap This Weekend

David Gill, Team Santa Cruz, Jeff Clark, Mike Evans- these are the names of some of the key figures to reignite the Surf City Cyclocross Series flame for 2009. Yes! The Surf City Series is back after a few years hiatus. The Surf City Series is the oldest Cyclocross Series in the U.S.A., with the first official Surf City Cyclocross Series held in 1978, (but) it originated in 1973 on the UC-Santa Cruz campus as Uncle Charlie's Cyclocross. Uncle Charlie's Summer Camp was a nickname for the college, and Surf City was a strong description of the surfing culture of Santa Cruz. Bob Liebold was the original Surf City Cyclocross Series founder. Leibold then passed the torch of promotion to Jeff Clark and the Surf City races posted solid growth into the 1990's. Jenny Robinson, Nicole Amaral Hoefer & Sabine Dukes have also carried the torch of promotion and kept the spirit of Surf City Cyclocross alive over the years. Cross is fun & challenging & the Surf City Series filled a special niche in Nor-Cal cycling lore. Today, David Gill, Team Santa Cruz, and Jeff Clark have brought the Surf City Cyclocross Series back to life. They are fired up to keep the oldest Cross Series in America a tradition that remains for all to enjoy. For me, I am thrilled to have a chance to race Surf City again, as that is where I got my first start at Cyclocross many years ago. I am sure there are countless other racers who are exactly the same as myself, and their virgin Cyclocross competition was a Surf City event. I would like to personally thank anyone who has had a hand in the past editions of the Surf City Series over the many, many years of its existence. Basically, the Surf City Series started all the energy each region of Nor-Cal has for racing Cyclocross. Back in the day, Surf City was the only show in town, and I am sure each Cross promoter now has been influenced in one way or another by the Surf City Series. I would also like to personally thank David Gill, Team Santa Cruz, and Jeff Clark for their hard work and dedication to the sport of Cyclocross- and bringing back the Surf City Series. This means great competition & awesome racing for all. Nor-Cal is lucky to have such outstanding Cyclocross tradition...

This weekend also features race #2 of the Sacramento Series which will be held at College Cyclery Compound. I am positive Rich Maile will piece together a stellar Cross course on that property.

I even think he kicked him before he got back on his bike. Notice Ben on the ground almost cowering in a ball as Larry Hibbard puts the beat down on BJM....

The Return Of Don Myrah

Don Myrah is one of Northern California's all time great cycling legends. It is a pleasure for myself, and other Nor-Cal racers to compete against him in his come back to racing, and witness his return to glory on two wheels. Don Myrah has accomplished an amazing amount since he first won the California State Junior Road Race title in 1984. In 1989, Myrah won the inaugural MTB XC World Championships while riding for his sponsor Tom Ritchey. In 1996, Myrah was one of two riders who represented the U.S.A. in Mountain Biking at the Olympics. Myrah has won the Elite Cyclocross National Championships 4 times! And collected a total of 7 medals from the USA Cyclocross National Championships. This makes Myrah by far the most accomplished Cyclocross racer in Nor-Cal! Many years ago I can personally remember watching him compete locally when he was America's best Cross rider, and he basically won every single time he raced in Northern California. One year Myrah went virtually undefeated in Nor-Cal racing. It was quite the task to finish within 2 minutes of his winning time for the other fast men of Nor-Cal Cyclocross. After the Olympics Myrah took a break from cycling and started a family. Then he decided on a racing comeback & got off the couch and back on the bike. It has taken the past 2 seasons of racing to bring on his current form and re-develop his fitness, stamina, and power. Myrah is a World Class athlete who knows there is no short cuts to great performances like the one he threw down this past weekend in winning the Master 35+ 'A" & Elite divisions at B.A.S.P. #1. Myrah has worked very hard on his comeback after posting very strong results at the end of the last Cross season. He then continued racing during this past year, instead of getting back on the couch. Myrah did selected CCCX MTB races & Nor-Cal Road events to keep his legs sharp and his focus firmly set on success. Myrah now has his sights set one more Medal from the Cyclocross Nationals, in the Master 40-44 division. I take this chance to personally congratulate Don Myrah for his return to racing at a very high level! All the racers, and fans of great cycling in this area are fortunate to be able to view his style on the bike and have a chance to compete again against one of the best riders ever from the NCNCA region...

Cross Is King In Northern California

Tom & Alex Simpson- the B.A.S.P. Series- & Mcleran Park in San Francisco hosted nearly 600 riders on Sunday- in what turned out to be an epic day of racing in Nor-Cal. The technical course designed was a challenge to all. One of the obstacles were a series of multiple tight apex switchbacks leaving no room for passing- especially on the first lap where space was a minimum in the large fields. Add on 2 steep climbs- that came seemingly back to back, numerous tricky descents filled with lots of bumpy sections, one steep pitched run up, and the route left all the racers feeling as if they got their money's worth. Karen Brems(Webcor) went off solo for most of the Elite Women's race, holding her gap to the line for a strong win. While Don Myrah(Ibis/Buy-cell.com) put forth one of the most outstanding performances in recent Nor-Cal Cross history, riding to victory in both the Master 35+ "A" Men's division & Elite Men's division. Other notes of interest from B.A.S.P. #1 were the sheer amount of racers that migrated to Mcleran Park. The "C" Men's division had a record 107 riders partake in the racing. There were nearly 50 Master Men 35+ "A" racers in action, and almost 80 "B" Men on course. The Master Men 35+ & 45+ "B" divisions were huge, and there were more Female racers on course then the first B.A.S.P. race in 2008. Cross truly is king in Nor-Cal!...

Don Myrah emphatically answered the question regarding the speed of the Master Men 35+ "A" division Vs. The Elite Men's division. Answer: The Master 35+ "A" winner can do his 2nd race of the day and still win the Elite Men's race....
Karen Brems was on a solo mission while claiming the Elite Women's race....
The Men's Elite leaders- 36 year old Chris McGovern(HRS Rock Lobster) and 43 year old Don Myrah put on quite the tussle in the final laps. Myrah went on to the B.A.S.P. race #1 Elite Men's victory in what can only be called a incredible display of Cross skill & power from the past 4 time USA Elite Champion. Myrah was the overall USA National Cyclocross Champion in 1989, 90, 91. & 93....

The Master Men's 35+ "A" field boasted the most National & World Champion cyclists of all the divisions on the day. Casey Kerrigan patrols the start making sure no one dares jump his "Go" whistle....

One of Nor-Cal's best ever female racers Carmen D'Aluisio made a stellar return to Cross racing taking a solid 2nd place in the Women's Elite event.....

HRS-Rock Lobster sponsored Stella Carey rode an inspired race to claim 3rd place in the super talented Elite Women's division....

Courtney Shipman(Bike Station Aptos) had a strong run in the Women's "B" division....

It was a very impressive turnout of female racers at B.A.S.P. #1. Here at the start elbows were out as the Women fight for position on the first run up.....

Kathleen Bortolussi(HRS Rock Lobster) showed fine form in coming 2nd place in the Women's 35+ division behind Nor-Cal legend Linda Elgart(Webcor/Alto Velo)....

It was a sea of bicycles and racers on the first run up in the Men's 35+ & 45+ "B" divisions. Record turnouts made for some very tight racing on course.....

Bay Area Super Prestige Series Opens Sunday

This Sunday McLaren Park in San Francisco will be the starting point to the 8th season of racing for the Bay Area Super Prestige Series. Over the past 8 years, B.A.S.P. Owners Tom & Alex Simpson have worked tremendously hard to produce a high caliber Cyclocross Series worthy of National recognition. Their dedication to Cyclocross racing in and around the San Francisco City area has delivered a super popular series for all. The B.A.S.P. races bring Northern California's different regions into one ring for a main event- heavy weight battle- Cyclocross style. The popularity of the B.A.S.P. races are evident in the huge fields in all divisions, as well as the party like atmosphere that revolves around the racing. Personally, I admire and commend Tom & Alex Simpson for bringing together all of Northern California for the Cyclocross extravaganza that the B.A.S.P. has become. All levels of racers have a go on challenging courses, such as over 30 "C" Women at last years Golden Gate Park event. Hosting Cyclocross events in or near the big city of S.F. accomplishes quite a lot in terms relating to growth of the sport. Tom & Alex keep it fun for everyone, while also attaining a tremendously high competitive level in the advanced races. Some of the Men's divisions could have 100 riders on course at once. Racer numbers like this in certain divisions rival some of the biggest Cyclocross Series in America. When you bring together so many Cyclocross crazed athletes and fans good times are inevitable. So not only are the B.A.S.P events about fast racing and ultra competitive full fields, they are about fun and commodore among teams and racers. I fully recommend you take part in the B.A.S.P. races or venture to the event to cheer on the riders. The racing action is fast paced, and the fun and frolic of the locals can flow at a even faster pace. One key note for B.A.S.P. 2009 is their hosting of the NCNCA District Cyclocross Championships at Golden Gate Park. It looks to be a great season of Cross racing in S.F., & like all the racing in Northern California, the B.A.S.P. Series is awesome...

Past Weekend Wrap-Up

It was a busy weekend of racing for Northern California Cross racers with competitions in Sacramento, Reno, & Monterey. Many Nor-Cal racers also traveled around the USA testing out the talent in places such as Vermont & Wisconsin. Nor-Cal's own Andy Jacques-Maynes(Bissel) has produced standout rides- making top 10 in some very high ranked events. AJM is a player on the National level and he has dedicated himself to a very strong Cross schedule for 2009. Both winners at CCCX #1 one week ago, Devon Haskell(Velo Bella) & Justin Robinson(Cal Giant Inc.) had strong rides in Wisconsin. Haskell made top 10 at the USGP races both Sat & Sun. From what I have heard the Sacramento Series race #1 was very successful. I have personally raced at Del Paso Park and the courses there can be deceptively hard. Chris McGovern(HRS Rock Lobster) & Emily Kachorek were the Elite winners on the day. Linda Elgart(Webcor) was the Master 35+ Women's winner, Joe Miller(Taleo Racing) was the 35+"B" Men's victor, and Spence Peterson the "B" Men's king for the day. I did notice there were 53 riders in the "C" division in Sac. Town, showing the growing popularity of Cross in the Capitol. Meanwhile in Monterey, HRS-Rock Lobster showed the strength of their team in taking 4 of the top 5 positions in the Elite Men's division at CCCX race #2. Only Don Myrah, who also ran away with the Master's 35+ event, was able to sneak on the Rock Lobster controlled podium. Josh Snead patrolled the front for most of the Elite Men's race before making his race winning move in the latter stages of the hour long test. In the CCCX Women's Elite race Kerry Barnholt(Scott/Ritchey) claimed top honors after a thrilling duel with Karen Brems(Webcor). In other races Robert Meighan(Cal Giant Inc.) won his 2nd straight 45+ Men's "A" race. Kevin Crossley(HRS/Rock Lobster) was the "B" Men's winner, while Michael Hyde( Buy-cell.com) & Karl B Ehlert(Webcor) were the Master "B" 35+ & 45+ champs. San Luis Obispo's Bob Guglielmelli took the Men's 55+ win & Kathleen Bortolussi the Master Women's 35+ win. Junior winners on the day were Madeline Myall(Cal Giant Inc.), Matthew Valencia(SugarCRM/LGBRC), & Tobin Ortenblad(Bike Trip/SCJCC). Links to all the results & some very good photos are below. The Sacramento Cyclocross Series race #1 is one three feature Cross events taking place this weekend in the NCNCA region. The Sagebrush Series- presented by Reno Wheelman- will open up their racing at Dorthy Mcalinden Park in Stead Nevada on Saturday 9/26. While on Sunday- 9/27, the Sacramento Series & CCCX Series will host events. The Sacramento Series has grown over the past few years, and has slowly developed into standout races that draw large groups of Cyclocross hungry talent. Cross in the Capitol is now driven by Rich Maile, and he brings to the table a strong group of volunteers who are eager to make Sacramento a Nor-Cal player in Cyclocross racing. Personally, I have raced many times in Sac. Town, and very much enjoyed the courses and competitors. The initial masterminds of Sacramento Cross racing John & Linda Elgart paved the way for today's popularity of the Sacramento Series. Now racers from in and around the State Capitol area can partake in awesome racing on challenging courses. I do think the Series is in good hands with Rich Maile at the helm, and surely goods things will keep coming from the Sacramento Cyclocross Series. Also on Sunday is the CCCX Series race #2 in Ft. Ord, near Monterey. The Central Coast Series race #2 will be contested on a very challenging course that combines pavement, dirt, fire roads, a testing run up, and some spectacular trails that are just plain fun to ride. It looks to be a strong weekend of racing for everyone in Northern California & Nevada. Ride safe & have fun...

Competiton Fast & Furious At CCCX #1 This Past Sunday

Round #1 of the CCCX Series delivered most of Northern California's Cyclocross talent to the course in what will surely be a prime example of the racing action that will go down during the 2009 Cross season. All of the divisions on the day were hotly contested on a race route that received strong reviews from Cyclocross critics. The 10:00 a.m. "B" Men's division featured some amazing tactical battles and the large number of riders in the Master B 35+ & 45+ groups show Cyclocross's popularity across the board. The main event "Elite" Mens race went down as expected with Cal Giant Inc.- HRS/Rock Lobster putting on quite the epic duel. Lobster riders Josh Snead & Chris McGovern took on Cal Giant's Cody Kaiser & Justin Robinson in a attack filled brawl. When push came to shove, Justin Robinson separated himself from the others when it mattered most and took the win. The "Elite" Womens race saw 2 new comers to Nor-Cal Cross racing have a large impact on the proceedings. Chicago native, Devon Haskill(Velo Bella), who recently signed a Pro Road contract with Team Tibco rode a dominating race off the front and basically soloed to a stellar victory. While Colorado's Kerry Barnholt(Scott/Ritchey) animated the chase action, then contested the sprint for 2nd place with Karen Brems(Webcor). Brems was not to be denied and claimed the silver medal on the day, relegating the talented Barnholt to 3rd place. The Nor-Cal Women's racing is only going to get better with 2 new powerful athletes joining the already stacked ladies "Elite" group. The Mens 35+ A Masters division was by far the most loaded division of pure talent on the day, with multiple National Champions going toe to toe on course. Northern California Masters Cross racing is with out a doubt on the highest level in the entire U.S.A. -3 TIME National Masters Champion James Coates(Cal Giant Inc.) claimed high honors in this legends group of Masters racers...

Madeline Myall(Cal Giant Inc.) has tremendous athletic ability and won the Junior Women's race....
Kerry Barnholt & Stella Carey(HRS/Rock Lobster) lead out the "Elite" Women's race up the main pavement climb....

The short run-up section provided some great action for the fans....
The Master 35+ & 45+ 'B" divisions had some of the best racing on the day....
All kinds of elbow to elbow action took place at Manzanita Park in Prunedale....
Many of the finishes came down to full on sprints between small groups up the final pavement climb, making for great viewing of the racing exploits....

Central Coast Cyclocross #1- The Feature Event This Weekend

The CCCX Series will host it's opening race this Sunday- Sept. 20, at Manzanita Park in Prunedale. The Central Coast Cyclcoross is the feature event for this weekend in Nor-Cal, and there should be some epic racing taking place in all divisions. This will be the 12th season of Cross races for the CCCX Series. The Manzanita Park venue was the scene of last years NCNCA District Championship race where Justin Robinson & Sarah Maile claimed high honors. The courses at this site have always produced deserving winners. HRS/Rock Lobster vs. Cal Giant Inc./Specialized will be the main event battle in the Elite Men's & Women's races. Or maybe there will be a surprise victory in the Elite races from a rider not on the "Super Teams- Rock Lobster & Cal Giant Inc."- it will be very interesting to see who makes their mark in Northern California Cyclocross 2009...

Cal Giant Inc. sponsored Gannon Myall was the Master 35+ "A" division CCCX Series champion in 2008. Sharing the podium with Myall were Tim Thompson(2nd), Mark Howland(3rd), Keith DeFiebre(4th), and Don Myrah(5th).
Action starts at 9:00 a.m. and it looks to be a perfect day for racing this coming Sunday. All CCCX info can be found here....

The Men's "C" division and Junior divisions will open up the proceedings. Nor-Cal's Cross races have developed some outstanding Junior talent over the years. One rider to watch this weekend will be Logan Loader. The fast charging Loader was the 2005 CCCX Series Junior winner and has been competing at a very high level on the Road during 2009- riding for Team Mtn. Khakis. Loader may play a leading role in the Elite division this season.

HRS/Rock Lobster rider Josh Snead was the CCCX Series winner in the Men's Elite division last season.....

The 10:00 a.m. start is the most action packed race of the day. On course will be Men's B, Master Men 35+ B, Master Men 45+ B, Master Men 55+, and the Single Speed B group. Each group start in a separate wave, making for quite the spectacle on course. This time slot produces some of the best finishes of all, with many races coming down to a sprint for the win among a select group of riders in each category.

Buy-Cell.com riders Cesar Chavez and Tim Cannard dominated the "A" Single Speed division at CCCX 2008....

HRS/Rock Lobster will be hard to beat in the Elite Women's race at 12:30 p.m. Sarah Kerlin and Stella Carey are a tremendous 1-2 punch from the HRS/ Rock Lobster team. However, new to Nor-Cal Cyclocross racing is Scott/Ritchey sponsored Kerry Barnholt, and her strength and experience will certainly have a huge impact on the Elite Women's racing during the 2009 season. Barnholt will be competing on Scott Bicycles new ADDICT Cross bike dressed with SRAM & Ritchey components, and she has competed at past Cross World Championship events- thus bringing this experience to the course. A rider of Barnholt's caliber will ultimately pick up the level of all the Elite Women racers this season in Northern California.

HRS/Rock Lobster sponsored Stella Carey is one of Nor-Cal's all time great Cross racers. Carey was the Elite Women's CCCX Series winner in 2005, 2006, 2007, & 2008.....

Kerry Barnholt, Sarah Kerlin, Barbara Howe, Sarah Maile, Elizabeth Albut, Holly McGovern, Jermey Ferguson, Kirk Fitzpatrick, Chris McGovern, Josh Snead, Cody Kiaser, Don Myrah, these were some of the fast folks during the first few races of 2009. This past weekends Livermore & Folsom races were a great success. The early season races help riders get in sync with their Cross bikes & lead into the bigger battle of CCCX #1, where major bragging rights are on the line & most of Nor-Cal's heavy hitters will meet. CCCX #1 will take place this Sunday September 20 and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top when the stakes are higher...

It will just keep getting better and better for Nor-Cal Cross racing as the season progresses. With CCCX #1 this Sunday, then the series opener for Cross in the Capitol- The Sacramento Cyclocross Series the following weekend, as well as CCCX #2, the racing exploits will continue to expand.

It continues with the Bay Area Super Prestige Series Race #1 on Oct. 4, then the re-birth of the Surf City Series on Oct. 11.

It will be very interesting to see which riders will make their mark during the 2009 Cross campaign.

This Saturday- LARPD #2 & Folsom Cyclebration Cyclocross

The racing this weekend will be on Saturday, with options in Livermore at the LARPD #2- or the Negro Bar Folsom Cross. Personally I like both locations for some Cyclocross. Dave Carr's mud index would not register for this weekends events as sunshine and dry conditions will be par for both courses. Livermore looks to be fairly pleasant and manageable with a high of 88 degrees, while Folsom is going to be the sun screen event with a temperature forecast of 96 degrees at race time. Both courses are super fun to compete on, and I have enjoyed my time in the saddle when I have raced at each location. I highly recommend you support these events with your participation in the racing. Bring lots of water, lots of sun screen, and lots of smiles, because good times should be had by all this Saturday in Folsom at Negro Bar and Livermore- LARPD #2...

I have always liked the courses at Negro Bar. I enjoyed the early races at this venue set up by John & Linda Elgart. I do believe they were the pioneer's of this venue. The races there in the past always had a good mixture of many different types of terrain. Excellent racing for sure!

LARPD Opens Cross Season This Weekend In Livermore!

Karen & Shane Huntoon will kick start the 2009 Cyclocross season for Northern California this Saturday in Livermore with their excellent LARPD Series opener. Both Karen & Shane have had successful bicycle racing careers and they use this experience to put forth fun and well run races for all ages and skill levels. It is on for Cross racing this weekend, the season starts now! For the first few races of the LARPD Series the courses feature some cool grass sections of riding. There will also be many twists and turns to tantalize and test all riders while preparing everyone for the challenges that racing Cross delivers. Amazingly the temperature forecast looks not overly hot & brutal as it can be scorching in the East Bay this time of year. It should be a very pleasant day for racing this Sat., Sept 5, Nor-Cal's first Cross event LARPD #1...

I highly recommend having a go at some Livermore races. The action is fast and the riding is straight up fun. There is no better way to start the season then jumping right on some of the sweet courses Shane puts together. Will Huntoon use his famous "six-pack" board set up??, I doubt it for the Series opener. One thing you can count on is a good time!

BAR- Best All Around Rider Rankings for the 2009 Season

For the 2009 Cyclocross racing season the NCNCA Cross page will feature a super sized BAR-Best All Around Rider ranking system. The BAR rankings have been used for years on the Road Race side of the NCNCA, as well as for Cyclocross from 2000-2003. One thing that makes the 2009 super sized version of the BAR rankings unique is the fact that all divisions will receive recognition in the overall BAR standings. From 2000-2003 it was only the Elite Men & Women, Master 35+ "A", and Junior riders who received a BAR ranking. Since 2003 Cyclocross has grown in popularity and each race now has many levels of talent on display. So for 2009 the BAR rankings will feature all divisions. The Race for the Chase of BAR points will make each and every race important, and in the end the Nor-Cal's Best ALL Around Riders will be crowned...

The 2009 NCNCA Calendar is basically complete. Looking at the races on tap it is going to an amazing season of Cyclocross. Established Cross series such as the B.A.S.P., C.C.C.X., and Sacramento, will be in action as usual. The biggest news could be the revival of the Surf City Series by Team Santa Cruz. Stellar races such as the L.A.R.P.D. Series, CXSR- Santa Rosa, Sagebrush Series-Reno, will continue. As will Fresno's Homegrown Series, some Velo Promo Cross, and the epic Peak Season races. Combine all of this with one day classics such as Folsom Cross, The Lion of FairFax and Velo Bella's super fun Halloween extravaganza, and there is non stop action all season long...

Keith DeFiebre, Kirk Fitzpatrick, & Julien Villafane, fight out the "hole shot" at B.A.S.P. Golden Gate Park in the Single Speed division. You decide who got the jump?? Fitzpatrick won the race....
The 2009 version of B.A.S.P. #4 at Golden Gate Park is going to be huge, as the powers that be agreed to holding the NCNCA District Cross Championships at this awesome venue for a race.

Josh Snead- Nor-Cal's #1 Cross Racer In 2008

The 2008 Cyclocross season was a break out year for Team HRS/Rock Lobster's Josh Snead. For many years Snead has been one of the fastest Elite riders in Northern California. However Snead could not crack the code of dominance put forth by Cal Giant sponsored riders such as Justin Robinson, and the Jacques-Maynes brothers Ben & Andy. In 2008 things were different. Snead lit up the front of the Elite division time and time again, breaking down Nor-Cal's best Elite riders and solidifying himself as the top gun of NCNCA Cross for the 2008 racing season...

The talented Rock Lobster sponsored rider ended his year with a stylish wheelie and overall title's at the CCCX Series and the Bay Area Super Prestige Series- two of Nor-Cal's hardest series to win.....
Snead shown here pulling Justin Robinson, posted numerous race wins in 2008 and proved time and time again he was the most consistent Elite rider in Nor-Cal during the entire season....
Snead knows that to beat the best he had to master all aspects of Cyclocross. Whether it be bunny-hopping, getting on and off the bike at speed, running over obstacles and up hills, or throwing down power on course. Snead put it all together in 2008 and should be a force again in 2009....

The Elite division of Northern California Cross has produced some of the fastest racers in all of America. Names like Daryl Price, Don Myrah, Justin Robinson, Damon Kluck, and Andy & Ben Jacques-Maynes have graced the front of the NCNCA Elite division over the past 15 years.

Josh Snead added his name to the list of Nor-Cal's pure dominating riders during the 2008 race season. Snead used fitness and fight to bring the action directly to the other fast men of Northern California. Week in and week out Snead produced outstanding rides and left other riders gasping for air in his wake. His Rock Lobster Team was equally as dominate and this in-house strength surely aided Snead's cause during the past race season. I suspect Snead's game will only improve in the future as tasting success usually leads to more of the same in Cycle racing. And for 2008 Josh Snead tasted the most success and was NCNCA's most outstanding male Cyclocross racer.

Velo Girls & Cyclocross Clinic Action

With the Cyclocross race season growing ever so near, more clinic action is being reported. Velo Girls is on their game for getting all riders fired up for Cross season. I tracked down some info on a few upcoming Cross activities with help from Lorri Lee Lown. Now is the time for the Cross specific training to begin, or at least time to start thinking about it...

Velo Girls Coaching Services has sent out some info I would like to pass along regarding some Cross Clinics and Cross specific training.

Be sure and try to make one of these VeloGirls clinics, as one of the instructors will be John Funke. Mr. Funke is super skilled and is one of Nor-Cal's fastest riders when on form. He also is one of the NCNCA's best Cross instructors.

The very best Cyclocross racer from Northern California for the 2008 season was by far Rachael Lloyd. The worlds most difficult races were her stage, and the greatest competition and most talented racers on the planet were her adversaries. Every now and then a rare jewel athlete will form from a region of racing like the NCNCA, and Rachael Lloyd was that one of a kind diamond for 2008...

This lady has power, drive, and skills. Combine this with a iron will and super athletic ability, and you have the making for one of the best Cyclocross racers ever from Nor-Cal....

Horrible conditions~~ bring it on says Lloyd....

The 2008 Cyclocross season was a break out year for Rachael Lloyd. Stepping up to a full commitment of racing in the most challenging races in Europe, Lloyd found a home at the front of affairs among the worlds best racers. In the USA she finished 3rd at the Elite National Championships. In Europe she produced numerous high finishes, such as 2nd at Vlaamse Witloof Veldrit - C2, 7th at Cyclo-Cross World Cup #8 - CDM Roubaix, France, 5th at Cyclo-Cross World Cup #9 - CDM Milan, Italy, and 11th and the World Championships.

Rachael Lloyd was Northern California's most outstanding story for the 2008 Cyclocross race season.

It is my pleasure to highlight her performances and give proper respect to a great racer who's 2008 achievements produced possibly the best season of racing ever, from any Cross racer from Nor-Cal. Lloyd has proven herself to be one of the best Cyclocross racers on the planet, and I hope she continues to grace us with her tremendous exploits on the Cyclocross bicycle.
