Districts This Sunday, Howe and O'Dell take Sierra Point Night Race
Howdy folks! Quick reminder here that the NCNCA District Championships will be held this Sunday at the CCCX event in Prundale (Manzanita Park). Look for a Districts preview from Dusty Downs shortly.
Wowsers! Even though I can't race, I couldn't keep myself from checking out the first nighttime cyclocross race ever to be held in the Bay Area on Saturday night. Tom Simpson and the Pilarcitos crew had Sierra Point lit up like Christmas, and racers and spectators were treated to a wonderful evening of racing. The course was (as expected) short, flat, fast, and twisty with a few fun up-and-downs. Blinky lights, disco balls, and glow sticks kept the atmosphere festive with parties raging in the tent and run-up areas...
Barb Howe was stomping her authority on the Women's Elite race when I arrived, with Kathleen Hannon and Sarah Bamberger just behind duking out the remaining podium spots.
In the M35+ race Steve Reaney (CalGiant/Specialized) made a valiant effort and reeled in a huge gap to reigning Masters National Champ James Coates (Morgan Stanley/Specialized), but couldn't seal the deal as Coates prevailed in the final corner.
In the Men's Elite race, fellow HRS Rock Lobsters Aaron O'Dell and Josh Snead broke away from an 7-man group that formed early in the race. O'Dell took top honors over Snead with teammate Scott Chapin coming in shortly after.
See the pilarcitos site for full event results from all categories.
Here's hoping the "night race" becomes a new tradition in the Nor-Cal scene.
Good luck at Districts!

Steve Reaney, not Mike
It was good to see you out there!
Thanks Sabine...fixed it. Apologies to Steve and all his minions...
Maybe this series should be called the Bay Area Not So Prestigious Series with botched results in almost every catagory. If a "cross race can't be scored accuratly in the dark, run in the day light. My opinion of the night race? Fun to watch, a waste of time money and effort for those of us whose results are wrong and remain unchanged even after protest.
